Smart Heating
Controls Installed
in Watford
Smart controls fitted, configured and explained properly — so you actually use the features that lower your bills, and the app doesn't end up ignored in a drawer.
What smart controls actually covers
What it is
Supply and installation of smart heating controls — main thermostat, smart TRVs, boiler interface — configured for your home, wired correctly to your boiler, and set up on your phone with a proper walkthrough.
Who it's for
Anyone with a mechanical thermostat, a programmer that hasn't been touched since it was installed, or smart controls that are 'kind of' set up but not actually saving money.
When you need it
Alongside a new boiler is ideal (best gains from weather / load compensation), or any time you want more control over room-by-room temperatures and heating schedules.
Why professional help matters
Smart controls only save real money when they're fitted correctly, use the boiler's OpenTherm or eBUS communication where available, and are set up with schedules that match how you actually live. Half-configured smart controls are worse than a good mechanical thermostat.
The cost of leaving it
A smart thermostat bought off a shelf and wired in on/off doesn't save what it should. Most of the potential gain lives in the setup you never see.
What can go wrong
- Wiring a smart control as a simple on/off (dry contact) throws away most of the efficiency gain — you want OpenTherm or manufacturer-specific communication (eBUS for Vaillant, etc.) wherever possible.
- Without weather compensation or load modulation the boiler still fires at 80°C when 55°C would do — burning more gas than needed.
- Smart TRVs installed on a badly balanced system don't fix the underlying problem — they just paper over it.
- A control fitted without correctly wiring the S-plan or Y-plan can cause hot water or heating to run unexpectedly, burning gas 24/7.
Common mistakes we see
- Buying the wrong SKU for your boiler (many need the specific boiler-interface version, not the retail 'v3' box).
- Leaving factory defaults in place — schedules, hysteresis, minimum-off times, boost length.
- Not enabling weather compensation or load modulation when the boiler supports it.
- Ignoring the 'geofencing' features that turn heating down when the house is empty.
Our process

What you get
Lower gas usage
Weather compensation, load modulation and geofencing together can meaningfully cut annual gas usage.

Smart TRVs let you heat rooms you're using, not the ones you aren't.
Correctly wired
OpenTherm or manufacturer protocol used wherever the boiler supports it — not dumb on/off.
Set up around your life
Schedules built around your actual routine, not the leaflet's defaults.
You'll actually use it
Proper walkthrough on your phone means the app doesn't get abandoned.

In detail
Which smart control is 'best' depends on your boiler, your wiring and how you live. Here's what we fit and why.
Tado (Matt's personal recommendation)
Tado is what Matt runs in his own home. Excellent room-by-room smart TRV ecosystem, strong OpenTherm support with modulating boilers, weather compensation built in, and reliable geofencing that turns down the heating when the last person leaves the house.
Hive, Nest and others
Hive is a solid, straightforward smart thermostat with great scheduling and multi-zone support. Nest is well-designed and learns your patterns over time. Both work well when configured properly. We fit all major brands.
Vaillant vSMART / VRC 700
On Vaillant boilers, the manufacturer's own controls use eBUS to modulate the boiler flow temperature far more accurately than any third-party control. Where the boiler is Vaillant, this is often the best-performing option.
OpenTherm and load compensation
OpenTherm is a modulating communication protocol between thermostat and boiler. Instead of on/off, the thermostat tells the boiler exactly how hot to run. Combined with weather compensation, it can reduce gas use significantly on a well-balanced system.
Smart TRVs
Smart TRVs give you individual room control with schedules and open-window detection. They work best where the underlying system is properly balanced — otherwise they mask rather than solve the imbalance.
Frequently asked questions
Which smart thermostat do you recommend?
Matt uses Tado at home and recommends it for most Watford homes — it's a well-rounded system with strong smart TRV integration and OpenTherm support. For Vaillant boilers, Vaillant's own controls often perform best.
How much does installation cost?
Depends on the control chosen and whether wiring changes are needed. Every job is quoted in writing before we start.
Will a smart thermostat really lower my bills?
Yes — but only if installed and configured properly, and only on a healthy heating system. Weather compensation, load modulation, geofencing and correct schedules together can meaningfully cut annual gas usage.
Can I use smart controls with any boiler?
Most modern boilers are compatible. The real efficiency gains come when the boiler supports OpenTherm or a manufacturer protocol (eBUS for Vaillant) — we'll check and advise before quoting.
Can you fit smart TRVs on my existing radiators?
Almost always — most standard TRV bodies accept smart heads. We'll confirm at survey and swap valve bodies where needed.
Will you set up the app for me?
Yes. Setup on your phone and a full walkthrough are included. You leave knowing how to use it.
Do you guarantee the installation?
Yes — 12-month workmanship guarantee, plus the manufacturer's product warranty on the hardware.
Do you cover my area?
Yes — we cover Watford, Northwood, Rickmansworth, Pinner, Bushey, Hatch End, Stanmore, Middlesex and Greater London. If you're nearby but not listed, please call.
